With the aim to analyse the risk of nitrate leaching under different management practices and cropping systems, soil water potential and nitrate concentration in soil solution can be measured simultaneously, using Tensionic tensiometers. The indicator for the amount of nitrate lost between two depths below rooting zone is calculated from a variable calculated from the hydraulic gradient and the nitrate concentration of the soil solution. The indicator reveals down- and upwards movement of the soil water, e.g. during the vegetaition period or in arid conditions (Cuny et al., 1998).
