Generally, a monitoring of pesticide concentrations in rivers with a catchment > 10 kmĀ², in lakes with a surface area > 50 ha and groundwater has been obligatory in the European Member States since the year 2000. Surface water bodies below these sizes are not considered within the EU-Water Framework Directive. This may pose risks to small water bodies, which are often located in rural areas with intensive agricultural use. To address this issue, several EU Member States have integrated the consideration of small water bodies in their National Action Plans. Differently treated in the national indicators. Include either run-off and/or drift.
